What I Presented at NESCON 2022

NESCON 2022 was held at AIIMS New Delhi — one of the most important ENT conferences in India. I presented a paper on VNG Features of Vestibular Migraine, and it won second prize in the paper presentation category. That recognition meant a lot, but the real value was in the conversation it started with colleagues from across the country.

Vestibular migraine is one of the most commonly missed diagnoses in vertigo clinics across India. Patients come in with episodic dizziness lasting minutes to hours, sometimes with mild headache, sometimes without. They have often already been told it is BPPV, or anxiety, or “BP problem.” The VNG findings in these patients are subtle but recognisable — and that is exactly what my paper addressed.

Why This Research Matters for Patients

In my clinic in Hardoi, I see vestibular migraine more often than many specialists realise. The key insight from my NESCON presentation: VNG (Videonystagmography) shows specific patterns in vestibular migraine that distinguish it from BPPV and other peripheral disorders. Without VNG, these patients are often misdiagnosed and given treatments that do not help.

Correctly identifying vestibular migraine changes the treatment completely — from a repositioning maneuver to migraine prevention with diet, lifestyle changes, and sometimes medication. Read more about vestibular migraine diagnosis and treatment here.

Representing Hardoi on a National Stage

One thing I want to say plainly: winning a prize at AIIMS Delhi as a doctor practising in a smaller city like Hardoi matters. It shows that quality vestibular care does not only exist in metro cities. The same diagnostic rigour, the same evidence-based approach, the same outcomes — we are delivering them in Central UP.

Patients from Kannauj, Farrukhabad, Sitapur — they should not have to travel to Delhi or Mumbai to get a proper vestibular diagnosis. That is exactly why I invested in VNG equipment — the only such unit in 150km radius — and why I keep presenting research at national conferences. The goal is to bring the best of academic medicine to the patients who need it most.

The Bangalore Maneuver Connection

My work on VNG in vestibular migraine at NESCON 2022 built on my earlier research on the Bangalore Maneuver — the repositioning technique I developed for anterior canal BPPV. The two are linked: anterior canal BPPV is frequently misdiagnosed as vestibular migraine and vice versa, because both can show downbeat nystagmus. Getting that distinction right with VNG is what determines whether the patient needs a maneuver or a migraine protocol.

I have been refining this work ever since, and in 2025, it contributed to my receiving the VAI Budapest International Award at the Vestibular Academy International conference — a recognition that placed this work in a global context.
