What an assessment may include
A consultation may review symptom timing and triggers, walking safety, hearing symptoms, migraine features, current medicines and neurological warning signs. A trained clinician may select positional examination, hearing assessment, eye-movement testing or another investigation when indicated. VNG is not required for every patient and does not by itself guarantee a diagnosis or distinguish every peripheral and central cause.
Emergency symptoms come first
New weakness, facial droop, speech difficulty, double vision, fainting, severe new headache, inability to walk safely or other new neurological symptoms require emergency assessment. Sudden hearing loss in one ear needs urgent same-day medical or ENT assessment. Do not travel to a routine distant appointment when local emergency care is the safer option.
Planning the journey
Check the current route and travel time with a reliable map or transport provider before leaving. If you are actively dizzy, unsteady, visually disturbed, sedated by medicine or having unpredictable attacks, do not drive yourself. Arrange a companion or other transport. There is no universal waiting period after a positional test or manoeuvre; ask the treating clinician whether you are fit to travel and drive.
